Saturday, November 7th, 2009Leider ist zur Zeit alles langweilig und kaum erwähnenswert. Oder es entzieht sich erfolgreich meiner Kenntnis. Wahrscheinlich das Letztere. Ich befürchte fast zwangsläufig muss man sich doch selbst etwas einfallen lassen. Ich fange gleich damit an. Zumindest darüber nachzudenken. Bestimmt. Noch dieses Jahr vielleicht schon.
Bis dahin muss auf Altes zurückgegriffen werden. 30 Jahre Altes.
The MANIAC (Multiphasic Analog Inter-Active Chromataphonic (sequencer)) was an analogue sequencer having variable step lengths, and the ability to split sequences into several smaller groupings giving considerable sonic potentiality. Addition and subtraction of events was possible, as well as the possibility to chromatically correct the output during performance. David Vorhaus could program his MANIAC sequencer to play a background rhythm or combination of musical events, to then improvise over the top with another instrument or synthesizer.
The Kaleidophon was a double-bass-like instrument using four velocity-sensitive ribbon controllers instead of strings. The instrument is played entirely using the left hand, leaving the right hand free to manipulate the sound via a number of controllers and a joystick.

Thursday, October 29th, 2009Da hatte ich als Jugendlicher früher zehn von den Teilen rumstehen und anstatt sie nur debil anzustarren hätte ich daraus doch so sinnvolle Musikinstrumente basteln können. Nur wie…hmm. Leider hab ich in der Schule meist auch nur aus dem Fenster geschaut…

the spoon box
Sunday, October 4th, 2009Ein weitere Konstruktion aus unserer Reihe ‘Musikinstrumente, die du mir gefälligst zum Geburtstag schenken wirst’.
Die ‘Spoon Box’, erdacht von den von mir gern gehörten Laptop-Folkern ‘The Books‘. Ich habe mich ja immer gefragt, wie sie diesen Küchenutensiliensound hinbekommen. Das die Lösung so einfach ist. Man hätte es wohl ahnen sollen.
This will take a little bit of explaining. I built this prototype of the Spoonbox out of wood, plexiglass, zinc plates, measuring spoons, and closeout radioshack parts. It hooks up to a CD player and small amplifier which cause the spoons to dance. There are small speakers behind the spoons that move in response to the sounds on the CD which I carefully composed using low frequency sine waves and kitchen sounds. The speakers, in turn, blow small puffs of air into the spoons which cause them to bounce/vibrate in rhythmic patterns. It really must be seen to be understood, but this video might give you some sense of what it does.

Man bräuchte mit Sicherheit keine Freunde mehr, wenn man nur einen solchen ‘Drum Buddy’ hätte.
Dieser ist ein Drummaschinesynthesizerkonstrukt, das bislang nur 10x vom New Orleanser Musiker Quintron gebaut und auf eBay verkauft wurde. Wenn du mir also eine kleine Freude machen willst – Weihnachten steht ja quasi vor der Tür.
Vier lichtaktive Oszillatoren mit einer mechanisch rotierenden Drummaschine. Das sieht toll aus und klingt auch so. Schwer zu beschrieben und daher besser seh und hörbar im Demovideo. Wer an ADHS leidet, sollte ein bisschen vorskippen (4:00). Aber am Besten vielleicht doch nicht.

In Bb 2.0 ist eine Kollaboration von verschiedenen Musiker, die auf wundersame Weise 25 Youtube Videos von einzelnen Instrumentalen zu einem gemeinsamen Track zusammenfügt, ganz gleich, wann wieviele der Videos zusammen abgespielt werden. Erstaunlich unterhaltsam.

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009OTTO is the prototype of an electronic musical instrument for realtime manual beat slicing of audio samples, developed by Luca De Rosso.
OTTO provides a tangible user interface designed with the aim of giving the user the feel of having the sample in his hands. The musician can manipulate an audio sample in real time through the use of a restricted number of simple physical buttons and switches.
PLAY ALONG A PRE RECORDED MELODY
In this video OTTO is payed along a pre recorded melody made with and external software like Reason, Logic or something else.
JAMMING ON A DRUM BEAT
A little improvisation playing along a melodic loop which goes endless from Ableton Live.
GLITCH EFFECTS
On OTTO prototype glich effects are not properly developed but you can anyway reach something interesting by designing the right audio sample and make it glitch.
